Maybe the game will be balanced well enough that this doesn’t matter, but compared to how many other shooters handle unlocks and upgrades, moving to an entirely loot box-based system feels designed for pure monetization while making the game actively worse than it might have been otherwise. Yes, you can earn these boxes and items through playing the game, but it’s hard to see how paying players won’t have an early advantage. It’s sort of a kick in the teeth when you get killed by an enemy who manages to have top-notch Star Cards on their character, boosting damage or health or reducing cooldowns, while you feel undermatched. Though there is a crafting system in place, it’s mostly the luck of the draw, and once these loot boxes are purchasable, luck may end up having very little to do with it. You are reliant on loot boxes for weapon upgrades and ability “star cards” that reduce cooldowns or increase damage. It will take some time to figure out if Battlefront 2’s use of loot boxes is truly awful or just annoying, but either way, I’m not a fan. Combined with the top-notch visuals, there are few games that look and sounds this good.

I would not list sound design as a huge plus for many games, but in Battlefront 2 its quality is so noticeable that it’s impossible to leave it off a list like this. The scream of TIE Fighters, the pew-pew of blasters, all the iconic sounds have been perfectly integrated into Battlefront 2 with music to match.
The action may not be quite as cinematic as the trailers, but it’s pretty damn close, and this remains the most impressive part of the game, in my eyes.

This will be the game to show off a hugely powerful console like that, but even on my PS4 Pro, it already looks great (at least in combat, the UI is a different story which I’ll get to later). This is without question, the most gorgeous Star Wars game I’ve ever played, and I have a hunch it’s essentially going to be the flagship game for Xbox One X, given Microsoft’s partnership with EA and the fact that they no longer have Crackdown 3 coming out at launch.
